Day 4

Slow Down and Fast
Fast food is cheaper because it’s quick and often of less quality. If you just want a little God-snack to get you by and toss up a prayer that God will keep your life between the ditches as you rocket down the road of life, then just go to church and soak up a little truth, do a little praying on your way to work and hope you’re covered…and be sure to cry out to God, “Why did you let this happen?!” when you crash. Slow down. Spend time with God and His word. Pray while listening. Pray without ceasing. Fast.

It’s easy for us to cheapen prayer by only praying shortly and quickly. Who can then accuse you of not praying? No one. Even short and quick prayer is quite effective and blessed by God when it comes from His children and aligns with His will. The challenges of this world and worries of the flesh, however are quite powerful and persistent. They demand and God desires that our communing with Him through prayer not always be quick and short. Jesus said that by faith we could simply speak and move mountains, but some things are so severe that they only happen through prayer AND fasting (Matt. 17:20-22). Fasting cannot be done shortly and quickly, but it helps us to slow down and spend time and energy expressing our trust in God and asking His providence. Please make tomorrow a day of prayer and fasting for God’s will and power in your life. Slow down and fast.

Consider and pray:
You may fast from (do without) food or from something else that will remind you to pray.
You may fast fully or partially.
Every time you feel hunger you are reminded to pray and claim that we do not live by food alone, but by every word of God.
Luke 4:4
Fasting should be “given” to God as a sacrificial offering
Fasting should be difficult and require discipline upon yourself expressing a full submission to God and desire to suffer for the sake of the Gospel.
Paul listed “fasting” alongside “weary, toil, hunger, thirst, cold, stripes, sleeplessness, imprisonment” in 2 Cor. Consider longer fasts in the future.
Matthew 6:18 Fasting is not a secret, but it is private.
It is between you and the Father who sees your private act and will reward you openly.
